A quick break from the Big 12

The Longhorns returned home this past weekend after big wins against Missouri and Oklahoma State. After another slow start, Texas defeated the University of Central Florida 35-3.

It was an early game for the Longhorns on Saturday, but fans gradually made it to their seats for the win. As an incentive for students to come early, the football department let the first 100 students, to visit section 25, receive priority seating for the post-season game.

Although getting early to the game on Saturday sounded like a good idea, it didn’t go exactly as I had planned. The early start left me dragging behind, along with many other students who didn’t quite make it to the game or showed up particularly late. Grabbing a cup of coffee did help make the Longhorns slow start not as painful to sit in the stands.

Since the game against UCF was not as impressive as the big win last week against Oklahoma State, the Longhorns dropped in the BCS standings, despite remaining No. 2 in the AP and coaches polls.

There are only three more regular season games, and every week means Texas is that much closer to reaching the BCS National Championship game.

Another game down

Many people thought Texas would win this weekend, but no one could have predicted that the Texas Longhorns would demolish the Oklahoma State Cowboys this past Saturday 41-14. With the Cowboys ranked No. 14 in the BCS, many people thought they would be the only team to challenge Texas during the regular season.

The win was huge, and Sunday’s polls proved that. Well, they did have a little help from Alabama.

Although Alabama didn’t lose, their bye week let the Longhorns bypass them in the AP, Coaches, Harris and BCS polls. Texas is now No. 2 in all the polls.

Many people now believe Texas will face Florida in the BCS National Championship game. I am one of those people.

I have already chosen my Christmas and birthday present, a trip out to California. So, you can only image how upset I will be if the only team to upset us this season could be Texas A&M.

If Halloween doesn’t scare you, maybe this game will!

This past weekend consisted of me, my dog and a pizza while watching the Texas vs. Missouri football game. As all my roommates seem to have more adventurous lives than myself, my dog Buddy kept me company as I watched the Longhorns cream the Tigers in the first quarter alone.

But wait, there was a shocking game right before Texas took to the field. As I was waking up from a late afternoon nap, I was distraught to see the score of the Alabama vs. Tennessee football game. With four seconds left in the final quarter of play, Tennessee was about to upset the No. 2 BCS ranked Alabama Tide.

After being teased by countless timeouts, I held my breath for possibly the biggest upset of the season. Bummer. Alabama blocked the kick and still remained undefeated. So much for calling my two cousins, who studied at Alabama, to rub it in their face.

But oh yeah, our dominating game.

Colt McCoy finally stepped up his play to show he is the best candidate for the Heisman. In the first three drives of the game, the Longhorns hit their stride to diminish any hope the Tigers had during their homecoming game.

With the final score Longhorns 41-7, many fans hoped it would be enough to put Texas ranked above Alabama.

The BCS polls were released Sunday, and once again the Tide were ranked higher than Texas, even after an almost humiliating Saturday night for the Tide.

This weekend should be a thrill to watch football for many of us not of age to go downtown. Halloween night will put fear into many Texas fans. It will be one of the hardest tests on the road this season, Oklahoma State.

Once again as I am watching from my T.V. this Saturday night (hopefully with roommates this time), Texas will prove to the nation once again they are the real deal. Let’s hope there are no spooks in this game.

Red River Rivalry Showdown

This past weekend I was fortunate to attend the Texas vs. Oklahoma football game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The atmosphere at the Cotton Bowl, along with the State Fair of Texas taking place, sets the scene every year for a fun filled weekend for Longhorn and Sooner fans.

Before the game began, many fans thought it would be a game all about the offense, but with Sam Bradford reinjuring his throwing arm early in the first quarter and many mistakes from Colt McCoy, the Longhorns defense won the game.

Although Colt McCoy didn’t impress like he did last year, he helped defeat rival school Oklahoma 16-13.

Texas fans left the stadium with sunburns and hope that the win was enough to keep Alabama at No. 3 in the BCS standings.

The BCS standings came out on Sunday, revealing Florida as No. 1 despite the AP Poll ranking Alabama No. 1. The Longhorns were ranked No. 3.

Although I still believe we deserve to be No. 2, I am also aware that it is highly unlikely both Southeastern Conference teams will go to the BCS National Championship game. Let Alabama and Florida fight it out in Atlanta to see who should go to Pasadena, Calif.

According to Fox Sports, the only top two teams in the first standings of the BCS have reached the title game. Texas and Southern California beat the odds back in 2005. All Longhorn fans can recall the outcome of that game.

I believe as long as the Longhorns keep winning their games, there is no reason for fans to worry about another snub for the national title.

Texas anticipates the weekend

Texas/Oklahoma weekend is one of the most talked about events during the football season, but the Longhorns have waited for this moment a whole year.

Before the Longhorns were able to think about Oklahoma, they first had to get past Colorado. After a slow start, the Longhorns defeated the Buffalo 38-14.

“It’s always difficult the week before because everyone is talking about the next week,” said Texas coach Mack Brown at a news conference yesterday. “I am glad that we are at this point.”

This weekend has brought in so much buzz, that ESPN’s College Gameday will broadcast their show from the Cotton Bowl and the State Fair of Texas on Saturday.

As a fan attending the game last year, it was an unforgettable experience to see the Longhorns upset the number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners.

This year should be just as thrilling after the Sooners went to the BCS National Championship game last year, despite the Longhorns win against Oklahoma.
